What to Wear for a Family Photoshoot in Orange County

Outfit Tips From a Local Family Photographer

Planning a family photoshoot? You’ve booked the location, chosen the photographer (hi! ), and now comes one of the most commonly asked questions: What should we wear?

As a family photographer based in beautiful Orange County, I’ve styled and photographed families everywhere—from beach cliffs in Dana Point to wooded trails in Laguna Niguel. I can tell you firsthand: the right outfits make a huge difference in how your photos turn out.

Here’s everything you need to know to look and feel your best for your upcoming family session in OC.

Start with a Color Palette

Choose a cohesive color palette of 3–4 coordinating colors, rather than matching outfits. Think of tones that complement your shoot location and the season.

For OC Beach Sessions:

  • Soft neutrals like cream, sand, white, soft blue, sage green

  • Avoid bright neons or heavy black (they reflect poorly with beach light)

For Nature or Trail Sessions:

  • Earthy tones like rust, olive, denim, mustard, taupe

  • Jewel tones like burgundy, forest green, or navy work great in cooler months

Pro Tip: Choose mom’s outfit first. Build the rest of the family’s looks around her—it usually sets the tone.

Dress Like Yourselves—Just Elevated

You want to feel like you, just slightly more polished. Think Sunday best, not red carpet.

  • Go for textures: linen, knits, gauze, and denim photograph beautifully.

  • Avoid logos, writing, or busy graphics. They distract from your faces.

  • Layers = dimension: Add a cardigan, denim jacket, or accessory to bring depth.

  • Plan for comfort: If your toddler hates that sweater, it’ll show in the photos.

Footwear Matters (Yes, Even at the Beach)

Shoes (or lack thereof) can make or break a cohesive look.

  • For beach sessions: barefoot is beautiful, or go with neutral sandals.

  • For trails/parks: casual boots, flats, or simple sneakers in earth tones.

  • Avoid: Crocs, athletic shoes with neon accents, or anything too distracting.

Accessories & Details

Don’t over-accessorize, but a little styling goes a long way.

  • Hats, hair bows, or scarves can elevate a look, especially for kids.

  • Keep jewelry simple and classic—avoid large watches or flashy logos.

  • Think about nails! Chipped polish or bright colors can stand out in close-ups.

Bring Backups (Especially With Kids)

Kids (and sometimes dads!) may spill, get sandy, or need a change. Bring:

  • A backup shirt or dress for young kids

  • A blanket that coordinates with your palette (great for sitting photos)

  • Wipes, snacks, and bribes—you know the drill

Outfit Inspiration by Family Type

Young Families

Try soft, neutral tones and textures—linen rompers, knit sets, and flowy dresses are great for little ones.

Bigger Kids & Tweens

Give them outfit choices within your palette. This helps them feel confident and involved!

Multigenerational Sessions

Stick to neutrals with a few coordinating accent colors. Keep everyone comfortable while staying cohesive.

Real Talk: It’s Not About Perfection

It’s about connection. It’s about the way your daughter clings to your leg or the way your son belly-laughs when dad tosses him in the air. Clothes help set the stage, but the real beauty is in the bond you share.
