How to Look Natural in Your Wedding Photos
(Even if You're Camera Shy)
Let’s be real: not everyone loves being in front of the camera. If the idea of posing for wedding photos makes you feel awkward or nervous, you are so not alone. As a wedding photographer, one of the most common things I hear from couples is: “We’re not photogenic,” or “We’re so awkward in photos.” I feel this in my core, friend. That’s why my husband and I have our portraits taken EVERY YEAR so I can remember how awkward it feels and empathize with my clients! 😂
But I have a secret. You’re not awkward—you just haven’t had someone guide you in a way that feels effortless. With the right direction and a relaxed approach, you’ll look like yourselves—just with better lighting and fancier clothes.
Below are my top tips to help you look and feel natural in your wedding photos, even if being in front of the lens isn’t your favorite thing.

1. Start With an Engagement Session
An engagement session is more than just extra pretty photos—it’s like a practice run. You’ll get used to my style of directing, learn what poses feel best for you, and build comfort being photographed together. By the time the wedding rolls around, you’ll already feel like pros.
2. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
This is your wedding day. The magic happens when you’re present with each other—not worried about your angles. I’ll guide you into moments that encourage genuine emotion: a forehead kiss, a quiet walk, a private joke whispered in your ear. When you're focused on each other, the photos reflect connection, not performance.
3. Movement Is Your Best Friend
Some of the most natural photos happen when you're doing something. I’ll ask you to walk, twirl, sway, or even just shift your weight to create natural movement. This keeps your body language relaxed and your expressions authentic—no stiff arms or frozen smiles here.
4. Don’t Worry About “Perfect” Posing
You don’t need to memorize Pinterest poses or worry about what to do with your hands. That’s my job. I’ll give you simple prompts and guide you every step of the way, so nothing ever feels forced. The goal is to capture you being you, not you being a model.
5. Laugh It Out
If you feel awkward, don’t fight it—laugh about it. Some of the best, most joyful photos come from a genuine laugh at how weird it feels to pose in public. I’ll turn those in-between moments into gold.
6. Trust the Process (and Your Photographer)
Remember, you don’t have to know what looks good on camera—I do. If you trust me to guide the process, I’ll take care of lighting, angles, and flattering compositions so you can relax and actually enjoy the experience. When you feel relaxed, your photos reflect that.
Bonus Tip: Wear Something You Feel Great In
This goes for engagement photos and getting ready shots. If you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows. Comfort + confidence = photogenic.
Final Thoughts
Looking natural in photos isn’t about being a certain type of person—it’s about feeling safe, relaxed, and connected. My job isn’t just to take pretty pictures—it’s to help you feel comfortable enough to be yourself in front of the camera. That’s when the real magic happens.
So don’t stress about being camera shy. You’re not awkward—you’re just human. And with the right guidance, you’re going to look absolutely incredible. And more importantly, you’ll feel incredible too.
