5 Things Your Wedding Photographer Wishes You Knew

As a wedding photographer, I wear a lot of hats: part artist, part director, part timeline manager, and occasional dress-fluffer, boutonniere-pinner, and crowd-wrangler. I love working with couples who trust me fully. But if I could sit down with every bride and groom before their big day and spill the honest truth, here’s what I’d tell them.

These are the 5 things your wedding photographer wishes you knew—because when you know them, your photos (and your experience!) are infinitely better.

1. Good Photos Take Time

Yes, I can work quickly when needed—but magic doesn’t happen in a 10-minute window between the ceremony and reception. If you want dreamy golden-hour portraits or those editorial-style detail shots, I need time and space to create them. Build in buffer time on your timeline, and let your planner or photographer guide how long things really take. It’s worth it.

2. Lighting Changes Everything

Beautiful photos are so much about lighting. Harsh midday sun? Not flattering. A dark reception hall? Tricky. If you’re unsure when to schedule your ceremony or where to get ready, ask me! I’ll always help you find the most flattering light. Bonus tip: natural light near windows = photographer heaven.

3. The “Getting Ready” Space Matters More Than You Think

Where you get ready sets the tone for the first part of your wedding story. A cluttered hotel room or dark Airbnb makes it harder to capture clean, calm, elegant moments. If you can, choose a space with good light, neutral walls, and minimal visual distractions—or designate a corner just for photos. Tidy rooms = timeless images.

4. You Don’t Need to “Practice Posing”

You don’t have to study Pinterest poses or learn how to “smize.” I’ll give you simple, natural direction throughout the day. My job is to guide you into the kinds of moments that feel like you—and look even better. You just get to relax, focus on your partner, and trust that I’ve got your best angles covered.

5. The Best Photos Come When You Let Go

You’ve done all the planning. You’ve made all the decisions. On the day itself, your job is to let go and be fully present. That’s when the laughter, tears, hugs, and real connection shine through—and those are the moments you’ll want to remember forever. The more you trust your vendor team, the more space you create for the day to unfold naturally (and beautifully).

Final Thoughts

I’m not just clicking a button—I’m telling your story. When you give me time, trust, and a little flexibility, I can do what I do best: capture your day in a way that’s true, beautiful, and totally you.
